Department of Marketing Management

The NAAC Peer Team visiting this College in 2004 urged the authorities of the College to introduce some computer and management oriented courses. The College initially established as an exclusive Commerce College approached the affiliating university with a request of extending necessary permission to introduce BBA course with the existing faculty members. But unfortunately, the effort was not materialized due to insignificant response from the aspirants. The very next year, in 2006 the college took the initiative to introduce B.Com. Honours Course in Marketing Management and after obtaining necessary approval from the affiliating university, the Course was duly introduced as a Honours Department with two teachers having specialization in Marketing Management at the Postgraduate Level, thus taken away from the Commerce Department. And so far the Department is the only of its kind among all the Colleges affiliated to the Vidyasagar University. As the Department of Accounting & Finance and the Department of Marketing Management are interrelated and some subjects are common without having any new recruitment of faculty members, the Department had been running successfully since inception with two full time teachers of Associate Professor rank and one SACT was added to the squad afterwards.

The Marketing Management Department, right from the inception is actively engaged in teaching as per the requirement of the business and corporate world, the affiliating university has modified the course curricula from time to time. The latest revision in the syllabi has been implemented from the Academic year 2023-2024 in compliance of the directives issued under New Education Policy where a bunch of new subjects are being offered.

Role of the Department

The concept of marketing that we visualize now has more to do with developments during the industrial revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. That was a period of rapid social change driven by technological and scientific innovation coupled with the orientation of mass marketing. One result was that for the first time , the production of goods was separated from their consumption. Mass production, development of transport infrastructure and growing mass media meant that producers needed to, and could develop more sophisticated ways of managing the distribution of goods.

In the present socio- economic perspective, Marketing plays a significant role, though at the initial stage marketing was considered to be activities concerned with advertising for selling products. Marketing is the interface between producers and consumers and  now marketing has become an intrinsic part of each and every business. As long as the concept of economy exists, and simultaneously business activities are in operation within the economy, marketing is supposed to be in demand. Marketing also provides a career in which personal preference is created especially for those who relish the challenge of networking and creating business relationships.

Apart from imparting lessons contained in the course curricula, the Department also stresses upon developing the moral, ethical and civic sense among the students so that each of them may become a responsible citizen of future India. With this objective in view, the Faculty members have started organizing Mentorship meetings with the students to help them in overcoming their individual problems in academic, personal as well as social life. Not only that for obtaining cordial cooperation from the guardians in building the careers of their wards, the faculty members arrange ‘Parent-Teacher Meet’ as and when required.

Marketing Management being an emerging field in the area of modern competitive business environment opens a challenging avenue for the young aspiring professionals. Keeping this objective in view, the Department attempts

  • To Provide all information regarding the scope and opportunities of this subject.

  • To impart the lessons in the perspective of real life scenarios with specific examples to day to day life phenomenal examples for creating interest in the subject.

  • To explore the latent potentialities of the students effectively, so that they may become successful in selling themselves in the job market.

  • To encourage the students in developing their entrepreneurial skill for taking up independent ventures according to their means and choice.

  • To train up the students in building their moral characters to become a responsible future citizen of the country.

  • To encourage the students to take part in extracurricular activities such as Sports, NSS, fine arts, music and other cultural competitions to enhance their self-confidence.
